Avro Lancaster

by: Harry Holmes
The Lancaster heavy bomber was one of the most powerful and revered aircraft of World War II. Its ability to carry heavy bomb loads through the night skies of Europe is legendary and its use by No 617 Squadron on the famous 'Dambusters' raid ensured it a prime position in aviation history. The airplane was a direct four-engined development of the Avro Manchester. The success was due to the idea of Avro's chief designer, Tom Chadwick, to marry the strong airframe of the Manchester with the newly designed Rolls Royce Merlin engine.

Avro Lancaster: Combat Aircraft of World War II

by: Bill Sweetman, Rikyu Watanabe
Avro Lancaster
This is the workhorse of the RAF night campaign against Germany. Successor to ill-fated Manchester, it was like other British heavies in having one very large bomb bay, enclosed by two doors. This allowed a wide variety of loads: 250, 500, 1000, 4000, 8000 lb, all the way up to 22,000 lb 'Grand Slam' bomb (not to forget the Dam-buster bombs). Even the B-29 Superfortress used two separate bays. (See bay sideviews on p.23) Lancs were equipped with either four superb RR Merlin, or Bristol Hercules engines.
